The Bolek Oak grows on Jan Metzig Square, right in the centre of Leszno. It was planted in 1871 as a Peace Oak and today it is one of the recognisable symbols of the town and a valued natural monument. The trunk circumference reaches about 525 cm and the tree is up to 28 metres tall.
The oak was named in 2013 in a competition in which residents submitted their proposals. The winner was Bolek — a reference to a former parish priest of the Holy Cross church, well deserving of the local community. The name caught on and is in common use today.
Assessments of the tree's condition are very good — specialists expect the oak to keep growing for centuries to come. The spreading crown gives shade, and the square around it serves as a town green with benches. A visit takes a quarter of an hour and is easily combined with a walk around the historic centre of Leszno, with the town hall and market square nearby.
