Bonarka is an inanimate nature reserve in the Podgórze district of Cracow, laid out on the site of a former quarry. It protects rock exposures documenting the history of a sea that covered the area millions of years ago. The site is small and compact, so a short walk covers its highlights.
The most striking features are the abrasion surfaces polished by waves and the clearly readable tectonic faults. Fossils are visible in the quarry walls: ammonites, bivalve shells, remains of sponges and fish. An educational trail with boards explains the geological periods and rock types, which makes the place a good outing with children.
The reserve neighbours several well-known spots in Podgórze — the Krakus Mound, the Podgórze Cemetery and the Liban quarry. They can be linked into one longer walk, a change of pace after sightseeing in the very centre of Cracow.
