The Tadeusz Kościuszko Oak grows in the former manor park in Ruszcza near Połaniec, in the Staszów district. It is one of the oldest and thickest oaks in Poland — the trunk measures over eight metres in girth and the crown rises to about 24 metres. The tree is estimated to be more than five centuries old, which makes it the most valuable feature of the whole park.
The tree owes its name to Tadeusz Kościuszko, who stopped in Ruszcza with his insurgent corps in 1794. The massive trunk splits fairly low into two mighty limbs, giving the oak a broad, unusual shape that can be recognised from a distance, even among other old trees.
The Kościuszko Oak is not the only veteran here — the park holds further impressive oaks of around 350 years, and its lanes lead through old growth to the former manor complex. The spot is quiet and shaded, good for a short stop on the way to the Vistula or to Połaniec.
