Pniów 7, Wieś Pniów
The „Pniów” nature reserve lies in the Lower San Valley in the Stalowa Wola district, close to the village of the same name. It protects a small body of water — a former oxbow lake — together with the surrounding reed and aquatic vegetation. It is one of the last so well preserved fragments of a natural river valley in this part of Subcarpathia.
The reserve was created for the sake of the water chestnut, a rare aquatic plant listed in the Polish Red Book of Plants. In summer its floating leaf rosettes cover the surface of the pond. This is one of the few places where the species has survived in the valley of the San and the middle Vistula.
The plant is threatened by falling water levels in ponds and oxbow lakes and by chemical pollution, so the water body must not be disturbed. Observation is done from the bank, best in summer when the plant flowers and fruits. The reserve is small and a visit amounts to a quiet walk along its edge.
