Bagna Średzkie is a protected landscape area right next to Środa Wielkopolska, in the valley of the Moskawa river. It is made up of a mosaic of wet meadows, reed beds, riverside thickets and peat bogs, a pattern that has become rare in the farmed landscape of Wielkopolska.
Water and marsh birds are the main reason for protection. About 140 species have been recorded here and nearly 60 of them nest on site, finding good conditions for raising young. The flora is just as rich: botanists have counted almost 280 plant species growing on meadows, flooded swards, in reed beds, alder carrs and peat bogs.
An educational trail runs across the area and lets you walk around the most interesting parts of the marshes without entering sensitive spots. The walk takes about two hours and works best early in the morning, when birds are most active. After rain and during the spring thaw the ground turns boggy, so high waterproof boots are useful.
