pl. Jana Pawła II, Krotoszyn
Plac Jana Pawła II lies in the centre of Krotoszyn, on the site of a former Trinitarian monastery — hence its earlier name, Park Potrynitarski. It is a small, well-kept square of park character, planted with old trees that shade the paths. It has borne its present name since 2005, when the monument to the Polish pope was unveiled here.
The greatest curiosity is a huge black walnut with a girth of about 460 cm, growing from three trunks — one of the thickest trees in the area. It is accompanied by oaks, limes, Austrian pine and black locust. Besides the John Paul II monument, the square commemorates an obelisk dedicated to the workers' uprisings of 1923, destroyed during the war.
This is a place for a short stop while touring the town: a quarter of an hour along the paths is enough to walk the whole grounds. The intimate scale and shaded benches invite a rest, and the nearby market square lets you combine the visit with the historic centre of Krotoszyn.
