Wieś Lekomin
The Barcza reserve lies on the western slope of Mount Barcza, in the Klonów Range of the Holy Cross Mountains, near Lekomin. It is a partial reserve, created to protect exposures of Lower Devonian rocks — one of the clearest records of that epoch in the region.
At its heart are two disused quarries where Lower Devonian sandstones were extracted in the early twentieth century. The pit walls reveal layers hundreds of millions of years old, legible even to a layman: alternating packets of sandstone and shale, tilted almost vertically by mountain-building movements.
The workings are surrounded by mixed forest dominated by pine, which is gradually overgrowing the old spoil heaps and sheltering wildlife. The yellow Barcza–Bukowa Góra trail crosses the area, and walking the reserve with a look at both quarries takes about two hours. The pit walls can be loose — better to keep your distance.
