Krynica Morska
The bare grey dune lies right beside national road 501, on the edge of Krynica Morska on the Vistula Spit. It is part of an older, stabilised dune ridge where mosses and lichens have bound the sand, giving the surface a greyish tone — hence the name of this whole habitat type.
Most of the dune is fenced off, but a marked path leads to its top, opening a view over the Vistula Lagoon and the forests covering the spit. The turf is formed by rare species: reindeer and slender cup lichens, Iceland moss and sand everlasting. The habitat is among the rarest on the Polish coast.
Grey dunes are extremely sensitive to trampling — damaged lichen turf takes decades to recover. Move only along the marked paths and never step onto the slopes. The climb with a short stop at the top takes about an hour and combines well with a walk through Krynica Morska.
