ul. Jałowcowa, Wieś Olszyna
The Devil's Stone stands in Olszyna in the Lubliniec district, on Jałowcowa Street. It is an erratic block some 510 centimetres in circumference and 180 centimetres high, one of the more impressive in this part of Silesia. Hollows and marks are visible on its surface, which legend interprets as the imprints of chains.
The real story of the boulder is far simpler than the tales: it travelled here with the ice sheet during the last glaciation. In the early twentieth century it was hauled to Olszyna from the surrounding fields on a horse-drawn sledge and set up near the tomb of the former owners of the estate.
The best known legend tells of a wager between a priest and the devil. The clergyman was to give up his soul if the devil managed to carry the stone to St. Anne's Mountain before the end of mass. The priest said the service at lightning speed, and the losing devil abandoned the boulder on the way. A visit takes a quarter of an hour and can be combined with a stroll through the village.
