The museum in Popielno operates at the research station of the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, on a peninsula between Lakes Śniardwy, Bełdany and Mikołajskie, at the edge of the Pisz Forest. The station works on the conservation of native breeds — the Polish primitive horse, Polish Red cattle and Polish black-and-white lowland cattle — and on education. The exhibition occupies a historic eighteenth-century granary.
The displays are arranged by theme. The largest is devoted to the Polish primitive horse and the animals of the Pisz Forest; separate sections cover the life of beavers, the plant communities of the peninsula and its field shelterbelts. A collection of shed red deer antlers draws attention, as do the old sleighs and horse-drawn carts kept in the working part of the granary.
A visit takes about an hour and combines well with a walk in the surroundings, where the horses live in semi-wild conditions. It makes a rewarding stop on a rainy day during a tour of Masuria, children included.
