Podkowa Leśna
The Bolesław Hryniewiecki Nature Reserve lies at the north-western edge of the Nadarzyn Forest, within the administrative boundaries of Podkowa Leśna and surrounded by the town's villa districts. It protects a well-preserved high oak-hornbeam forest of natural character, a fragment of the old Mazovian woodlands that has survived right beside the Warsaw conurbation.
Its greatest asset is the oak and pine stand aged roughly 160 to 180 years, regarded as one of the finest in Mazovia. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, jays, thrushes, bullfinches and chaffinches live in the crowns and tree hollows, while roe deer, foxes, hares and squirrels move through the undergrowth. Bats hunt over the clearings at dusk.
The reserve is named after Bolesław Hryniewiecki, a botanist and professor of the University of Warsaw, director of the Botanical Garden and co-founder of the League for Nature Conservation. The red trail of the Warsaw Tourist Ring Route runs through the area, so a walk here is easy to extend towards the surrounding forests.
