Wieś Momoty Górne
Stawy Duże, also known as the Momoty Ponds, stretch out by the village of Momoty Górne in the Janów district, within the Janów Forests (Lasy Janowskie). The complex of water bodies surrounded by pine woodland belongs to a Natura 2000 site and is one of the more important refuges for water birds in the Lublin region.
Above the water and in the shoreline trees you may spot the white-tailed eagle, which hunts here regularly, along with numerous water and wetland bird species. A viewing platform stands by the ponds, allowing observation without disturbing the animals, and two information boards about the local wildlife have been placed beside it.
The ponds and the surrounding infrastructure already functioned before the Second World War as part of the Zamoyski Family Fee Tail estate. A timber shelter stands in the nearby forest, a good place to rest before moving on. Two marked hiking trails lead to the ponds.
