Wieś Sołtyków
The Gagaty Sołtykowskie reserve lies by the village of Sołtyków in the Skarżysko district, Świętokrzyskie Province. Protection covers Lower Jurassic rock outcrops, mineralogical and palaeontological specimens, and the surrounding woodland with small water bodies in a former excavation pit.
The greatest curiosity here are the footprints pressed into sandy and clayey sediments some 200 million years ago by herbivorous sauropods. Tracks of both juveniles and adults have been found, which is regarded as evidence that these animals moved in herds.
The reserve takes its name from jet (gagat), a black variety of coal once mined here — it was the mining work that exposed the fossils. Walking paths cross the site, with sections carried on boardwalks over boggy ground. The area is managed by the Stąporków Forest District.
