The Horowe Bagno reserve lies within the town of Marki, by the road linking Zielonka with Radzymin, on the edge of the forest complex outside Warsaw. It protects a broad inter-dune hollow filled with peat, in which wetland habitats rare so close to a large city have survived. Only a dozen or so kilometres separate it from the capital, and yet it is quiet and empty here.
The heart of the reserve are the bog pools — shallow bodies of water, partly formed after former peat extraction and now gradually overgrowing. Around them stretch raised and transitional bog mats, waterlogged shores and fragments of oak-hornbeam forest, with fresh and mixed pine woods on the dunes. Dry forest and marsh side by side in such a small area give constantly changing views.
The ground is wet and the paths can be boggy, so proper footwear is essential. The reserve is best visited in late spring or in autumn, when mosquitoes are less of a nuisance. It is better not to leave the marked forest tracks — peat bog is sensitive to trampling.
