The Jeziorko Czerniakowskie reserve protects a fragment of a former oxbow of the Vistula in the Mokotów district of Warsaw, together with the land adjoining it. The lake is the largest natural body of water within the capital, and only a few kilometres separate it from the very centre. Its elongated shape reveals its riverine origin at a glance.
Protection covers the lake along with a belt of reeds, wet meadows and the trees along the shore. The reed beds are a nesting place for water and marsh birds, and the oxbow has kept the aquatic vegetation typical of such waters. It is one of the few areas in Warsaw where the natural pattern of the Vistula valley can still be read.
A nature trail runs around the lake — the walking loop takes about two hours. In summer a municipal bathing area with a beach is open, popular with the residents of Mokotów. Beyond the beach the rules of the reserve apply: keep to the marked paths and do not enter the reeds.
