Wieś Rycerka Górna
Śrubita is a forest nature reserve in Rycerka Górna in the Żywiec Beskids, protecting a surviving fragment of primeval fir and beech forest of the lower montane zone. What grows here is fertile Carpathian beech forest in its Silesian and Żywiec variety.
The reserve's greatest asset are its firs. They rank among the tallest in the western part of the Polish Carpathians and reach almost fifty metres. Deadwood is a key part of the ecosystem: fallen logs and standing dead trunks shelter insects, fungi and hole-nesting birds, creating a forest close to its natural state.
The undergrowth holds hard shield fern, the West Carpathian endemic three-leaved bittercress and several toothwort species typical of beech woods. The reserve is reached by forest roads from Rycerka Górna, and leaving the marked routes is forbidden. Sturdy footwear is essential, as the terrain is steep and slippery after rain.
