Wieś Krówniki
Szachownica is a small floristic nature reserve in the village of Krówniki in the Przemyśl district, in the San valley at about 195 metres above sea level. It protects a site of the snake's head fritillary — a rare, legally protected plant with distinctive chequered flowers. It is one of the few natural places where the species occurs in this part of Subcarpathia.
The reserve takes the form of a wet meadow where, alongside the fritillary, timothy grass, meadow grass, meadow buttercup and cuckooflower grow. The mix of species depends on soil moisture and land use — mowing at the right time is essential for the protected plant to survive here.
The best moment is the turn of April and May, when the fritillary blooms and the meadow takes on a purple hue. Outside the flowering season the reserve remains a habitat for numerous insects, arachnids and meadow birds. Plants must not be picked or trampled, and it is best to watch from the edge of the meadow.
