Wieś Wigrańce
Łempis is a nature reserve in the Sejny commune in the Suwałki region, in the north-eastern part of the Augustów Forest. It takes in three dystrophic lakes together with the surrounding reed beds, peat bogs and woodland. The whole complex sits in a glacial trough, which gives this stretch of forest a distinctly elongated shape.
The waters are poor in nutrients and strongly acidic, so aquatic vegetation is sparse; yellow water lily, white water lily and pondweeds can be found. The shores are overgrown with great fen sedge reeds and raised-bog moss carpets built mainly of sphagnum. These determine the balance of the ecosystem and the slow infilling of the lakes.
A red hiking trail from Nożegary runs through the reserve, letting you see the successive lakes without leaving the marked route. The ground near the bogs is boggy and treacherous, so stepping off the path is dangerous. Allow about three hours for an unhurried walk.
