Wieś Drzeczkowo
The „Ostoja Żółwia Błotnego” nature reserve lies by Drzeczkowo in the Leszno district, in western Wielkopolska. It covers a lake together with the surrounding marshes and wet meadows. It was established to protect the habitat of the European pond turtle — the only native turtle species in Poland.
Emys orbicularis is listed in the Polish Red Book of Animals. It needs calm, sunlit waters with lush vegetation and dry banks where the females lay their eggs. The reptile is highly sensitive to human presence, which is why the reserve has not been opened to visitors and entering its grounds is prohibited.
The „Along Forests and Lakes” cycling route runs past the boundaries of the protected area. It reveals the mosaic of woods, fields and lakes of this part of Wielkopolska without intruding on the reserve. The trail makes a good few-hour trip from a base near Leszno or Osieczna.
