Nowy Targ
Bór na Czerwonem is a nature reserve right next to Nowy Targ, one of the oldest protected areas in the Polish Carpathians. It protects a domed raised bog, an ecosystem fed solely by rainwater. Together with the neighbouring wetlands of the Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin it forms an extensive cross-border marshland complex.
Raised bogs account for only a few per cent of Poland's wetlands, so every surviving patch is of high natural value. In Podhale they are called puścizny or pustacie. Pine, cottongrass and peat mosses grow here, and the peat layer has been building up for thousands of years. The water level determines whether the whole system survives.
Visitor facilities with trails and information boards have been laid out around the reserve, and in winter cross-country ski tracks are prepared nearby. The forest district runs educational classes for school groups — it is worth booking them before arrival. The amenities of Nowy Targ are a few minutes away.
