The pedunculate oak named Bartek grows in Poręba in the Zawiercie district, right by the main road from Siewierz to Zawiercie, opposite the cemetery. It is one of the most impressive veteran oaks in Silesia — the trunk measures about seven metres in girth and the tree reaches 18 metres in height. It was granted legal protection as early as the interwar period.
Bartek grows in the open, which allowed it to develop a broad, rounded crown set six to seven metres above the ground. The tree is estimated to be around 400 years old; the seven centuries repeated in some sources are an exaggeration. A low fence surrounds the trunk and a green natural monument plaque stands beside it.
A stop at Bartek is a classic roadside break — a quarter of an hour is enough to look at the tree and take photographs. The ground is flat and paved, so the spot remains accessible with a pushchair. Poręba lies on the edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, making it easy to combine the visit with a route towards the castles of the Eagles' Nests Trail.
