Wieś Brokęcino
The Wrzosowisko w Okonku reserve lies in Złotów County in the northern part of Greater Poland, near the village of Brokęcino. It covers the grounds of a former military training area whose landscape was shaped by decades of exercises: heavy vehicles, burning and constant disturbance of the topsoil prevented the land from turning back into forest. The result is a wide open space of a kind rarely found in this part of the country.
Protection covers a complex of heathland and sandy grassland together with their distinctive flora and fauna. Late summer is the most striking season, when flowering heather covers the sandy rises in a solid sheet of purple. A viewpoint has been arranged for visitors on the site of a former observation post — from above the scale of the terrain and the mosaic of habitats are clearly visible.
The habitat survives only thanks to active management: the removal of trees and shrubs that quickly encroach on the open sand. Keep to the beaten paths and keep dogs on a lead. Access runs along forest and gravel tracks, so with a large vehicle it is better to stop by the surfaced road.
