Borne Sulinowo
The Diabelskie Pustacie reserve lies near Borne Sulinowo in West Pomerania and protects one of the largest heathlands in Europe. The open, undulating expanse covered with heather is a landscape type exceptionally rare in the lakeland belt.
The present look of the terrain is the result of long military use — exercises and fires kept the forest from encroaching and fixed the open ecosystem in place. The heaths themselves are far older, though: on a German map from 1875 the area is labelled Devil's Heaths, and that is where today's name comes from.
The greatest impression comes at the turn of August and September, when flowering heather turns the whole area purple. Beekeepers arrive then too, as this is an exceptional place for their hives. Off the marked tracks caution is required — this is a former military training ground.
