The Borowiec reserve covers part of the valley of the river Zwolenka near its mouth, in the Zwoleń district. It protects the peatland character of the valley together with the natural river channel and the adjoining wetlands. The reserve forms part of the Natura 2000 site Dolina Zwolenki, one of the more important wetland habitats in Mazovia.
The most valuable inhabitant of the reserve is the European pond turtle — the only native turtle species in Poland, strictly protected and threatened with extinction. It needs calm, sunlit backwaters and sandy banks where the females lay their eggs. The valley provides both, which is why the whole area is closed to tourist traffic.
The Pętkowice–Janowiec cycle path runs along the boundary of the reserve and allows the valley to be observed without entering the protected land. The route leads towards Janowiec and the Vistula gorge, so it fits well into a longer tour of this part of Mazovia.
