Wieś Ustrzyki Górne
The Wołosate raised bog lies in Bieszczady National Park, by the blue trail leading from Ustrzyki Górne towards Wołosate. It is one of the few so well preserved raised bogs in the Polish part of the Carpathians and a stop on the „Salamandra” nature path. An information board describing its origin has been placed beside it.
The bog developed on a gravel and clay terrace of the Wołosatka stream, shaped at the end of the Pleistocene and during the Holocene. Poorly permeable layers of Carpathian shale flysch retain water, which allowed peat to accumulate. The surface is built of peat mosses arranged in characteristic hummocks separated by hollows.
The site is viewed from the trail — stepping onto the surface of the bog is forbidden and dangerous, as the ground remains unstable. National park rules apply: move only along marked routes. The best time is summer and early autumn; in winter the approach can be covered with snow.
