The Peat Bogs of the Izera Valley reserve covers extensive raised bogs in the central, flattened part of the Izera Mountains, stretching along the Izera river for about three kilometres. The landscape of dwarf pine clumps, stunted spruces and open carpets of moss resembles northern tundra and has no equivalent in the other Sudeten ranges.
Conditions here are exceptionally harsh: some of the lowest temperatures in the country have been recorded on the neighbouring Hala Izerska, and the pool of frosty air in the valley persists into spring. Only bog plants endure in such surroundings — sundews, cottongrass, cranberry and dwarf pine. This is the least human-altered part of the Izera Mountains.
The bogs are viewed from the roads and trails running along the edge of the valley, among others from Hala Izerska and Jakuszyce; entering the peat domes is forbidden and dangerous. The routes are popular with cyclists, and in winter with cross-country skiers.
