The Józef Piłsudski Mound rises on Sowiniec hill in the Wolski Forest, in Cracow's Zwierzyniec district. It is also known as the Independence Mound, the Freedom Mound or the Grave of Graves. It is the highest of the city's mounds and one of its best viewpoints — in clear weather the Tatra Mountains can be seen from the top.
Construction began in August 1934, on the twentieth anniversary of the First Cadre Company of the Legions marching out of Cracow. After the marshal's death the mound was given his name. Soil from battlefields where Poles had fought was placed inside the embankment — hence the name Grave of Graves and the character of a symbolic memorial.
Access is free and unrestricted, and a comfortable cobbled road leads to the summit. The mound combines well with a walk through the Wolski Forest, as it adjoins a network of woodland lanes and trails leading towards the Panieńskie Skały rocks and the zoo.
