A ferry across the Vistula

The Tarnobrzeg – Ciszyca ferry links both banks of the Vistula at a point where the nearest bridges are more than ten kilometres away. For local people it is a shortcut in everyday travel; for visitors it is a chance for a short crossing and an unusual way of continuing a route along the Vistula.

How it works

The ferry shuttles across for most of the year, from morning until evening; interruptions usually result from water levels and from ice on the Vistula in winter. The crossing itself takes a few minutes. Current departure times and whether larger vehicles can board are best confirmed directly with the operator before arriving.

Historical background

The place also carries history: the Vistula was the border between the Russian partition and Austria-Hungary here, and the ferry crew refer to the former border post, adding reenactment touches to the trip. On both banks quiet, flat riverside roads begin.
