Karwów, Wieś Karwów
A spring surrounded by local devotion rises in Karwów, in the Opatów district. Tradition points to this spot as the family home of Wincenty Kadłubek, bishop of Cracow at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, author of the Chronicle of Poland and the first Polish chronicler known by name. Right beside the spring stands a shrine dedicated to him, with a plaque recalling that tradition.
The site is intimate: an enclosed spring, the shrine and the greenery around them. By the nearby road stands a statue of Blessed Wincenty holding a book, funded in 1919 by Jan and Maryanna Sidor. Similar figures can be found around Karwów and Włostów, forming an informal local trail of remembrance of the chronicler.
The place is visited by pilgrims and by people interested in medieval Polish history; folk belief attributes to the spring water the power to heal eye ailments. The stop is short and combines well with a visit to nearby Opatów and its Romanesque collegiate church.
