Lake Wigry

Lake Wigry is the largest lake in north-eastern Poland (area approx. 2,115 ha) and the most important body of water in the Wigry National Park. It is famous for its clean water, varied shoreline and abundance of fish (about 26 species have been recorded).

Location and surroundings

The lake lies in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, mainly in Suwałki County (the Suwałki and Nowinka municipalities); the Czarna Hańcza kayaking trail runs across the lake. The post-Camaldolese monastery in Wigry stands by the lake.

What's on offer / What to see

Here you can find eel, vendace, whitefish, perch, pike, lake trout, pikeperch and catfish, among others. Fishing is allowed from 15 May to 31 October, with periodic restrictions in selected areas; it is necessary to purchase a Wigry National Park licence (including for the Wigry, Pierty, Leszczewek, Omułówek and Mulaczysko lakes).
