The Castle of the Dukes of Masovia in Ciechanów is a lowland stronghold raised in the second half of the 14th century, during the rule of the Masovian dukes. It was set on a marshy terrace in the Łydynia valley, where water and bogs served as natural defence. A quadrangular circuit of walls with two corner towers has survived to this day.
After its restoration the courtyard and the walls were opened to visitors, and museum displays were arranged in part of the interiors: archaeology, the history of Masovia and temporary exhibitions. You can walk the crown of the walls and enter the towers, which offer a view over the town and the river valley. The castle is a museum branch and runs museum lessons, concerts and open-air historical events.
A visit usually takes from under an hour to two hours and works well with children, who enjoy climbing the walls. Because of the stairs and uneven ground, part of the route is difficult with a pram.
