The aqueduct in Fojutowo is a monument of hydro-engineering architecture in the Tuchola Forest, the longest structure of its kind in Poland. It forms the crossing of two watercourses: on the lower level (in a tunnel with decorative portals) flows the Czerska Struga, and on the upper one – the Grand Brda Canal.
The structure is located in the village of Fojutowo in the Tuchola municipality, in the heart of the Tuchola Forest. Nearby stands a wooden observation tower built as part of a tourism project concerning the Tuchola Forest.
The aqueduct was built between 1845 and 1849 as part of the construction of the Grand Brda Canal (1841–1848), whose purpose was to supply water from the Brda in order to irrigate meadows and fields around Czersk and to facilitate timber rafting. Between 1979 and 1981 the brick vault was replaced with a reinforced-concrete one, and in 2002 the concrete elements were covered with cladding, restoring the original appearance.
The structure is 75 m long and 68 m wide, and the difference in levels between the two watercourses is about 9 m. From the footbridge over the canal you can observe both perpendicularly flowing waters at the same time.
An attraction for tourists visiting the Tuchola Forest, canoeists paddling down the Grand Brda Canal and lovers of technical monuments.
The aqueduct is accessible all year round, with no fixed opening hours. Access to the observation tower may be seasonally limited – information is provided by the nearby inn.
