Buczyniec Inclined Plane (Elbląg Canal)

The Buczyniec inclined plane is the first and longest of the five dry inclined planes of the Elbląg Canal – a system unique on a global scale, in which vessels are moved overland on carriages running on rails, powered by water energy.

Location and surroundings

The inclined plane is located in the settlement of Buczyniec at km 36.77 of the canal, in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. It is the most frequently visited point on the route, with a history room and an exhibition of the inclined plane's mechanisms.

History

The Elbląg Canal was built between 1844 and 1860 according to a design by engineer Georg Jacob Steenke. Instead of the more than 30 locks originally planned, five inclined planes were used (Buczyniec, Kąty, Oleśnica, Jelenie, Całuny), which overcome a level difference of nearly 100 m. In 2011 the Elbląg Canal was recognised as a Monument of History.

What to see

The Buczyniec inclined plane has a track length of 490.30 m and overcomes a level difference of 20.62 m. A history room with a multimedia hall and an exhibition of casting moulds of the inclined plane's equipment and canal construction documents was created in Buczyniec. The revitalised facility reopened in May 2015.
