Oleśnica Inclined Plane (Elbląg Canal)

The Oleśnica inclined plane is one of the five dry inclined planes of the Elbląg Canal, overcoming the greatest difference in water levels of all the planes in the system.

Location and surroundings

The facility is located at approx. km 41.6–42.0 of the Elbląg Canal, near the village of Oleśnica, in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, on the inter-plane section Całuny–Jelenie–Oleśnica–Kąty–Buczyniec.

History

The inclined plane was built as part of the construction of the Elbląg Canal (1844–1860) according to Georg Jacob Steenke's design. The entire canal is a Monument of History (2011) and a technical monument.

What to see

The inclined plane's track is 479 m long, and the facility overcomes a level difference of 24.20 m – the greatest of all the canal's inclined planes. Vessels are carried overland on carriages powered by water energy.
