The Leśniewo Górne lock is the largest and best-preserved unfinished lock of the Masurian Canal – a monumental concrete structure that was never completed.
The facility is located near the village of Leśniewo, on the Polish section of the Masurian Canal, in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Nearby is also the Leśniewo Dolne lock.
The Masurian Canal is an unfinished waterway intended to connect the Great Masurian Lakes with the Baltic Sea via the Łyna and Pregolya rivers. Construction began in German times (from 1911, resumed in 1934) and was halted during the war (around 1940–1942). The canal was largely ready but was never put into use.
The chamber of the Leśniewo Górne lock is about 21 m deep, 7.5 m wide and 46 m long; the planned level difference was to exceed 17 m, making it the largest lock on the canal. The main concrete structure was completed, although the entire facility was only partly realised.
An attraction for history enthusiasts, lovers of technical monuments and tourists visiting the area around Węgorzewo.
The facility is in open terrain, accessible year-round. Caution is advised (a tall, unsecured structure).
