Piaski Lock (Guja) on the Masurian Canal

The Piaski lock in the village of Guja is the only completed lock on the Polish section of the Masurian Canal, a testament to an ambitious but never realised project to connect Masuria with the Baltic Sea.

Location and surroundings

The lock is located in the village of Guja in the Pozezdrze municipality, in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, on the Polish section of the Masurian Canal.

History

Construction of the lock began in 1934 and was completed in 1940. Unlike the canal's other locks (including Leśniewo Górne), which remained unfinished, the Piaski lock was fully realised.

What to see

The lock's concrete structure, well preserved, is a testament to German engineering thought of the 1930s. It forms part of a tourist route along the Masurian Canal.

For whom

An attraction for history and technical-monument enthusiasts and tourists exploring the area around Węgorzewo.
