The Paniewo lock is the only two-chamber lock on the Polish side of the Augustów Canal, one of the most interesting hydro-engineering structures of this historic waterway.
The lock is located at approx. km 60.9 of the canal, in the village of Paniewo in the Płaska municipality, in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, within the Augustów Primeval Forest.
The Augustów Canal was built between 1824 and 1839 according to a design by, among others, General Ignacy Prądzyński. The two-chamber design of the Paniewo lock was dictated by the large difference in levels (approx. 6.65 m) between Lake Paniewo and Lake Krzywe.
Vessels and canoes overcome more than 6 m of water-level difference here. The entire locking process takes about 40 minutes and can be watched from a footbridge suspended over the chamber.
An attraction for canoeists, cruise passengers and lovers of technical monuments.
Locking takes place during the navigation season (usually April–October); the locks are most often open 7:00–16:00.
