Dębowo Lock (Augustów Canal)

The Dębowo lock is the first lock of the Augustów Canal from the Biebrza side and at the same time the only historic lock on the southern section of the canal.

Location and surroundings

The lock is located at the beginning of the canal (approx. km 0.35), in the village of Dębowo in the Sztabin municipality, in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, near the Biebrza valley.

History

The lock was built between 1826 and 1827 as part of the construction of the Augustów Canal (1824–1839). It is single-chamber, with wooden gates preserved in a form close to the original design.

The single-chamber lock with wooden gates marks the beginning of the navigable route of the Augustów Canal from the Biebrza side.
