Lock in Przegalina

The hydrotechnical complex in Przegalina consists of two locks: the historic North Lock (out of service since 1992) and the operational South Lock. They enable navigation between the Dead Vistula and the Vistula Cut and protect the Żuławy from flooding.

Location and surroundings

The facility is located in Przegalina, in the Sobieszewska Island district of Gdańsk, Pomeranian Voivodeship, at the south-eastern edge of the island.

History

The North Lock was built in 1895 to connect the main course of the Vistula with the Dead Vistula and to protect the Gdańsk Żuławy from flood waters. It has been out of service since 1992 and in 1997 it was entered in the register of monuments (no. A-1645). The operational South Lock was built in 1975-1982.
