The Gdańska Głowa Lock is an important hydrotechnical structure on the Żuławy Loop route, regulating navigation and water levels between the Vistula and the Szkarpawa and protecting the Żuławy from backwater.
The lock is located in the area of Gdańska Głowa, at the point where the Szkarpawa branches off from the Vistula, on the edge of the Żuławy, in the Pomeranian Voivodeship.
The facility belongs to the hydrotechnical system of the Vistula Żuławy, whose locks and flood gates have, since the 19th and 20th centuries, protected the depressed areas of the Vistula delta and enabled inland navigation.
The lock is one of the key navigational junctions of the Żuławy Loop, linking the waterways of the Vistula delta. Tourist and sailing vessels pass through the lock.
