Dzierżno Lock (Gliwice Canal)

The Dzierżno Lock is one of the most impressive, twin-chamber locks of the Gliwice Canal, counted among the technical monuments of Upper Silesia, with a level difference reaching about 11 m.

Location and surroundings

The lock is located in the Dzierżno area (a district of Pyskowice), in the Silesian Voivodeship, on the route of the Gliwice Canal connecting Gliwice with the Oder.

History

The Gliwice Canal was built in 1934-1939 to replace the older Kłodnica Canal. Along about 41 km of its route, six twin-chamber locks were built (Łabędy, Dzierżno, Rudziniec, Sławięcice, Nowa Wieś, Kłodnica), regarded today as technical monuments.

What to see

The Dzierżno Lock is one of the most imposing structures of the canal - the level difference here reaches about 11 m. Many of the locks have retained their original equipment from the construction period.
