Szczytniki Lock (Wrocław)

The Szczytniki Lock is a historic single-chamber lock of the Wrocław Water Junction, today used mainly for tourist and recreational navigation.

Location and surroundings

The lock lies between Szczytnicka Island and the pl. Grunwaldzki district in Wrocław, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. The upper approach basin is home to, among others, the historic steam tugboat Nadbór of the Oder Museum.

History

The lock was built between 1892 and 1897 as part of a major hydro-engineering project intended to create a new navigable route along the Oder bypassing the city centre, serving among other things the transport of coal from Upper Silesia.
