Aqueduct in Arkadia

The Aqueduct in Arkadia is an ornamental, two-storey brick structure erected over a water cascade, modelled on ancient Roman aqueducts, forming one of the elements of Helena Radziwiłłowa's sentimental-romantic garden.

Location and surroundings

The aqueduct is located in the romantic park in Arkadia, in the Nieborów commune (Łowicz County), in the Łódź Voivodeship. The park is part of the Nieborów and Arkadia complex.

History

The aqueduct was built in 1784 to a design by Szymon Bogumił Zug, as an element of the sentimental garden founded by Helena Radziwiłłowa. It serves as a bridge over a stream at its mouth into the pond. From the outset it was designed as an artificial, romantic ruin, using original fragments of sculptures and architectural details.
