Całuny Inclined Plane (Elbląg Canal)

The Całuny Inclined Plane is the youngest and last of the five dry inclined planes of the Elbląg Canal, completing the unique system of transporting vessels overland.

Location and surroundings

The inclined plane is located at approx. km 45.8-46.3 of the Elbląg Canal, near the village of Całuny, in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, on the inter-incline section Całuny-Jelenie-Oleśnica-Kąty-Buczyniec.

History

The Całuny Inclined Plane was built between 1874 and 1881 as the last inclined plane of the Elbląg Canal (1844-1860), when the system was expanded with further structures. The entire canal is a Monument of History (2011).

What to see

The inclined plane track is 352 m long, and the structure overcomes a level difference of 13.83 m. Vessels are transported on rails on carriages powered by water energy.
