Upper Silesian Narrow-Gauge Railways

The Upper Silesian Narrow-Gauge Railways is a railway with a unique 785 mm gauge, considered the oldest continuously operating narrow-gauge railway in the world. The active tourist line runs from Bytom through Tarnowskie Góry to Miasteczko Śląskie (about 21 km).

Location and surroundings

The route runs through the industrial landscape of Upper Silesia, connecting Bytom, Tarnowskie Góry (with the Historic Silver Mine) and Miasteczko Śląskie (with its lake).

History

The standard gauge of 785 mm (30 Prussian inches) was adopted in 1846. The network mainly served the transport of raw materials in the Upper Silesian Industrial Region. Tourist traffic resumed in 1993. The railway is currently run by the Association of Upper Silesian Narrow-Gauge Railways.
