Hel Narrow-Gauge Railway (Military Narrow-Gauge Railway)

The military narrow-gauge railway on the tip of the Hel Peninsula is a historic railway of military character, managed by the Hel Museum Complex (Coastal Defence Museum) together with the Hel Railway Museum. The railway is a tourist attraction available in the summer season, allowing visitors to tour the former German artillery positions and ammunition depots of the Schleswig-Holstein battery.

Origins and purpose

The railway was built for the needs of the Hel Fortified Area - it was used to transport ammunition and supplies between the positions of the coastal artillery battery. Over the years the route was opened to visitors.

Route and visiting

The first train carries passengers from the B2 (Bruno) artillery position, home to the Coastal Defence Museum, to position no. 3 (Caesar). After changing trains, a second train leads to the grounds of the Ammunition Depots of the Schleswig-Holstein battery, where the Hel Railway Museum is located, featuring the unique LS-40 shunting locomotive. Museum admission is included in the ticket price.
