Bochnia Salt Mine

The Bochnia Salt Mine is the oldest salt mine in Poland, today made accessible as an underground tourist route and a facility with a therapeutic function (subterranotherapy).

Location and surroundings

The site is located in Bochnia in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. The tour begins with a mining descent through the Campi shaft.

History and what to see

Rock salt mining began in Bochnia in 1251; the mine operated as an industrial plant until 1990. The workings reach considerable depths (several hundred metres). The route leads through historic chambers and galleries, an underground railway, a boat crossing and underground chapels, and the story of mining history is enriched with a multimedia exhibition.

Who it is for

For individual tourists, families and groups; route variants of varying difficulty are available.

Infrastructure

Underground the temperature is about 15-17°C. The mine also offers accommodation and health stays in a chamber.
