"Former Babina Mine" geotourism trail

The "Former Babina Mine" geotourism trail leads through the grounds of a former lignite mine within the Muskau Arch Geopark - the only geopark in Poland inscribed in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Location and surroundings

The trail is located near Łęknica (Nowe Czaple), in the Lubusz Voivodeship, within the "Muskau Arch" Landscape Park.

History and what to see

The entire area was part of the large "Babina" mining enterprise, where lignite was extracted by underground, underground-open-pit and open-pit methods. The mine operated from 1921 to 1973. After the extraction, numerous colourful post-mining ponds remained (tinted by iron compounds), along with viewing terraces and an observation tower. The roughly 5-kilometre trail runs, among others, along a section of the former mine road.
