Osówka Underground City is one of the largest and best tourist-accessible underground complexes forming part of the secret German World War II project codenamed "Riese" (German for "Giant"). The complex is located in the massif of Mount Osówka in the Owl Mountains, within the village of Sierpnica in the Głuszyca municipality.
Construction began in mid-1943. An extensive system of concrete corridors, halls and fortifications was created, dug in part by prisoners and forced labourers. The purpose of the site remains to this day one of the greatest mysteries of World War II - it is associated with plans to build an underground command headquarters or armaments works. The complex was never completed.
The site offers several routes: a historical multimedia route, an extreme route, an educational route and the Memory Trail. Visits take place only with a guide. The underground maintains a constant, low temperature (about 8°C), so warm clothing is recommended.
The site is open all year, daily about 10:00-17:00 (hours vary by day of the week and season - details on the official website).
