Underground Olkusz

Underground Olkusz is a multimedia museum route located in the cellars beneath the Market Square in Olkusz - a town known since the Middle Ages as the "Silver Town" due to centuries of silver and lead ore extraction in the area.

Exhibition

The exhibition is housed in two parts: at the central point of the Market Square, where the 14th-century town hall once stood, and in the former starosty building about 100 m away (the seat of the former Olkusz mining authorities). The multimedia and traditional exhibition presents working conditions in the ore mine, mining tools, models of the silver and lead mine, as well as the history of the town and its inhabitants and the former mint.

Mining theme

The Olkusz mining district was one of the most important centres of silver and lead extraction in the former Poland. The exhibition presents, among others, a replica of the Silver Cross of the Olkusz Miners (Gwarkowie) and the "silver chimney".
